This is a thorough and comprehensive history of the entire Garfcord server.

Founding

On April 1st, 2022, Reddit announced the opening of the sitewide event known as r/Place. The event consisted of a blank canvas wherein users could place colored "pixels" every five minutes. As there was no objective set in place, people from different online communities would band together to collectively paint their designs on the canvas. In particular, the subreddit r/196 created the Discord server for organizing their plans for the event. This server would eventually come to be Garfcord as we know it today.

r/Place

The primary design created by r/196 was the subreddit mascot Spronkus Kronkus. Later on as the canvas expanded, offshoot projects such as Fanter and Mug Root Beer also emerged.

196 did not embark on this journey alone though. r/Place was a lawless land where diplomacy was the key to survival. Vital alliances (among numerous enemies) were made, both near and afar. The most notable of them included r/AnarchyChess, Hololive, and r/Technoblade. These communities alongside 196 founded the Bottom Left Alliance, an organization dedicated to maintaining peace within the bottom-left quadrant of the canvas.[1]
